What is TRP ?

When a show is scheduled for primetime viewing between 8 pm and 10:30 pm, there are many sponsors for its television broadcast. More sponsors mean more revenue for the channel. How is TRP calculated?
INTAM uses two different methods to calculate TRP. The second method is more advanced and reliable. It is known as the image matching technique. Here, the People’s Meter constantly records a small segment of the image that is being viewed on that particular television. Similarly, the agency records data from all channels on this image slice form.
The agency has data in its database on various channels and matches it with the data collected from these chosen households. In this way, they measure the popularity of the channel and collectively it is easier to get a national rating for the channel. These TRPs are then passed on to the channel managers to chart the future course of action. All television channels have used the television rating point to decide the destination of their programs.
TRP Rating
The TRP rainge is calculated by keeping the numerator as the number of impressions in the sample and the total target audience is designated with the role of the denominator and multiplied by 100. In today’s world, a TRP score of 3 is considered good and satisfactory.
Advantages and disadvantages of TRP
As usual, only a few selected households are intended for data collection. They may be from different geographic and demographic groups, but the fact is that data collected from a random few cannot represent the masses. It is not correct to judge a series or a program from these data, as there may be others that have not been selected for the purpose of the test and that are in favor of the program. Random judgment doesn’t do the channel or the shows justice. There has to be at least one larger survey to confirm the results.
Channels often use TRPs to hold the show on prime time or remove it to a lower-viewing schedule, or in certain cases, take the show off the air altogether. Okay, channels are looking to make money. But sometimes good series and shows are rejected due to incorrect interpretations of TRP and boring and useless things remain.
As for the benefits, then the sponsors look at the TRP of a program and become part of it, thus generating income for the channel. The most popular and most-watched series or reality shows get the maximum number of sponsors and that also from good and well-known companies. This is a winning situation for both the company and the channel. The channel gets funding and the company’s advertising gets a significant audience.
Are PRTs relevant?
PRTs can be relevant to some extent. At least, the producers of the shows know if their investment is worth it and if people are happy with what they are watching. The channel is pleased to know that they have chosen the right kind of programs to broadcast to the masses. Sponsors are relieved that their investment is paying off, as a wider audience is watching their commercials. So far so good; but it doesn’t stop there.
TRPs are calculated taking into account the viewing choice of a selected audience. This does not mean that it is infallible. Some programs enjoyed by the lower strata of the public may not necessarily appeal to the educated upper-class masses. And all good, informative shows may not have the same audience as daily operas and shows. Therefore, it is wrong to assume that PRTs are the final verdict in deciding the fate of a program.
Our country is very fond of entertainment and does everything possible to vote for shows that are “entertaining”. Now there is a big difference between “entertaining shows” and “good shows.” I mean, all the entertainment shows may not be good, and all the really good shows may not entertain ordinary people. So how can you decide by a random survey what is right and what is wrong? It is simply not appropriate and justifiable.

From high or sliding TRPs, channel directors and show producers prepare to revamp shows to make them more palatable or, if viewership is low, decide to terminate the show to save more losses. However, there are limitations for the ruler and to measure beyond that, we need a more comprehensive and infallible system.
